Just Released - 2014 [Ep.21, S.4]

“I’m becoming a ghost,
So nobody can know me …”

“Alone In My Home” – Jack White [2014]

Jack White has a fascination for creating sounds with vintage equipment. That fascination which continues on his 2nd solo collection, ‘Lazaretto’ (literally, a quarantine for lepers). Bulging with White’s spatter-paint guitar riffs, deliberately confounding lyrics, syncopated rhythm - and occasional fiddle solo, it sounds like no one else. You’ll hear an entree to ‘Lazaretto’ in this week’s JR.

Serving it up raw in this edition is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers with a preview from their long player, ‘Hypnotic Eye’ due at the end of next month. According to Tom its “a straight, hard-rockin’ record”. In the wake of its release, the band will begin a lengthy North American tour. Also still rocking, with ragged finesse is former Small Faces & Faces member, Ian McLagan with his Bump Band, naming their new album after the country in which they reside (‘United States’).

There’s Roots music as well, with the blissful harmonies of sisters, Johanna and Kiara Söderberg, known as the Swedish Folk duo, First Aid Kit. As well, you’ll hear from Adelaide Roots duo, The Yearlings. Their new collection, ‘All The Wandering’ follows 4 years of touring - and precedes another national tour, beginning next month.

Bringing the groove this week is the prolific Glasgow-based musician, King Creosote. His first new collection in 3 years (‘From Scotland With Love’) is timed for release next month to coincide with Scotland’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games. Also in a celebratory mood is Melbourne music mainstay, Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos) along with various friends in the Funk music combo, ‘Cookin’ On 3 Burners' .

You’ll hear some Deep Soul too, with a just released album from Brooklyn-based veteran, Lee Fields The record includes a nod to famous Oklahoma music legends, JJ Cale (“Magnolia”) and Leon Russell (“In The Woods”).

Emerging as a soulful force for Indigenous Aussie Music is Sydney-based musician, Radical Son. His long player, ‘Cause & Affect’ is three months out from its release but you’ll catch a preview of it right here.

Just Released - 2014 [Ep.20, S.4]

“In the days of my youth,
I was told what it means to be a man…”

“Good Times Bad Times” – Led Zeppelin [1968]

The prolific sage, Author Unknown, was once quoted as saying: “Strong lager and some early Zep tunes. I ask thee, is there a better way to spend an evening?”  Revisiting the first few Led Zeppelin albums in their freshly remastered (and newly expanded) form, really IS a great way to spend an evening and in this week’s JR, we go back to when it all began.

By sheer coincidence, you’ll hear more connections to the past from this week with Alabama group, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, reviving the great tradition of ‘60s Southern Soul and Australian singer Jen Cloher’s brooding new version of The Loved Ones’ 1967 classic, “Sad Dark Eyes”, released prior to her tour next month.

Also looking back is Paul Weller, adding to his 1998 career overview ‘Modern Classics’ with a second volume, ‘More Modern Classics’. The collection updates Weller’s music from ’98 to the present day and includes a new song which you’ll hear in this edition.

Meanwhile Damian Howard’s reflective “Once In A While” evokes the charm of Australian Country Roots music in the 1970s. The younger brother of Shane and Marcia Howard (Goanna), Damian is now a 20-year veteran, himself.

Also back, is the unmistakeable voice of Pretenders’ frontwoman, Chrissie Hynde. Named after the city in which it was recorded, ‘Stockholm’ is Chrissie’s first album released under her own name.

Recent visitors, the Arctic Monkeys have just released another single (the 6th) from their highly acclaimed album ‘AM’ while emerging English singer, Sam Smith has a new treatment of his current hit ‘Stay With Me’ featuring additional vocals from America’s Mary J. Blige.

Set squarely in the here-and-now (if not just a little beyond it), is just released music from Sydney DJ & Producer, Beni (aka Benjamin Single), Canadian House music producer, Deadmau5 and American Deep Soul singer, Son Little.

Arctic Monkeys: “Snap Out Of It” (new single)
St Paul & The Broken Bones: “Call Me” (from the album, ‘Half The City’)
