Paul Rodgers has been lauded on many occasions in his career as one of Rock’s greatest singers. From his time with Free and Bad Company in the ‘70s he could rip it up as aggressively as his British contemporaries, Roger Daltrey or Robert Plant. With ‘The Royal Sessions’, Paul Rodgers pays his respects to the music that inspired him to become a singer in the first place. In JR this week, you’ll hear how great that voice still is, reworking Soul classics by Sam & Dave and O.V. Wright.    

We also have a new single from Ed Sheeran. This time, Ed’s teamed up with the ubiquitous Pharrell Williams and has arrived at a completely new sound.

Melbourne’s Chet Faker has just released his long-awaited debut album, ‘Built On Glass’ after building a strong reputation over the past couple of years on a couple of EP’s and a slew of collaborations and remixes. You’ll hear the first sounds from the new album in this edition.

Meanwhile, it’s that time of year in Australia we like to call ‘Festival Season’. Among the many international visitors coming to our shores (or touring already) are Michael Franti & Spearhead, St. Vincent, Morcheeba, Eleanor McEvoy and Hugh Laurie. We have music from all of them in this week’s show.

As well, you’ll hear some great Roots music from expat-American singer, Jenny Queen (now based in Sydney) from her new album, ’Small Town Misfits’, produced by local Roots music champion, Shane Nicholson.

On the Comeback Trail® this week, we spotted former 10,000 Maniacs singer, Natalie Merchant. Next month, she’ll issue her first album of original songs in 13 years and we have a preview of it for you right here.

Just Released - 2014 [Ep.11, S.4]

In 2012, when Bob Dylan’s career reached its 50^th year, it was cause for great celebration. 20 years before then, a major concert event was held at Madison Square Garden in celebration of Dylan’s 30-year anniversary. Now remastered and expanded, the audio/visual document of that occasion reveals Dylan among friends, lots of them. A few of them have since left the stage for good. On JR this week you’ll hear some of the concert’s highlights.  

But it’s not just Bob who’s up for the reverential treatment this week. We also celebrate the career of Jackson Browne with the just released tribute album, ‘Looking Into You’. Among those who come to pay their respects are Bruce Springsteen and Don Henley.

The JR Radar confused “scan” with “Scandinavia” this week. We have the latest acoustic Folk musings of Sweden’s acclaimed Soderbeg sisters, aka First Aid Kit. From Norway, the latest Dream-Pop of Monica Birkenes’ artistic alter-ego, Mr. Little Jeans and from the Nordic hotbed of Iceland, the chilled Indie Folk of, Ásgeir Trausti Einarsson aka Ásgeir. 

Meanwhile, Architecture From Helsinki (if only by association), draws Melbourne into our Nordic orbit with their just released ‘NOW + 4EVA’.

Also suitably chilled out for this edition is Tori Amos who’s curiously titled 14^th album, ‘Unrepentant Geraldines’ is due out next month.

And we get Fonky, too. (That’s not a typo. It’s a state of mind.) Bringing the Funk this week is Kelis, with a preview of her new album, ‘Food’. On the Comeback Trail® this week, we spotted Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini. It’s been 5 years since his easy-going ‘Sunny Side Up’ album and it sounds like he’s found his swagger. You’ll hear a preview of his new album, ‘Caustic Love’ in this edition with the down ‘n’ dirty attitude of “Scream” (Funk My Life Up)”. (That’s not a typo either).

Just Released - 2014 [Ep.10, S.4]

50 years - and counting. That’s how long Australia has been entertained by the never weary Joe Camilleri. The Pelaco Brothers. Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons. The Revelators. Bakelite Radio. The Voodoo Sheiks. The Black Sorrows. They’re just some of the bands Joe has been associated with during all those years. In celebration of his half century in music, Joe is hitting the road again with a new Black Sorrows album ‘Certified Blue’ and you’ll hear tracks from it on JR this week.

Another Aus-Music veteran you’ll hear in this edition is former Angels’ frontman, Doc Neeson. After rebounding from some serious health issues over the past decade, Doc returns with a new version of Flash & The Pan’s classic, “Walking In The Rain”.   

And there’s more Aussie talent this week with new releases from Adelaide band, The Audreys and Rock singer, Dan Sultan with the first fruits of his recent recording sessions in Nashville, Tennessee.

Another treat comes from Aussie Blues trio, Backsliders with their 13^th studio album, ‘Dark Side’. The song “Prayer Flags” is written by Broderick Smith, an Aus-Music survivor in his own right.

English Trip-Hop trio, London Grammar have just released another single from their debut album, ‘If You Wait. The band has already made a huge impression both in their homeland and here in Australia and are now finding more supporters on their current tour of North America.

On the Comeback Trail® this week, we spotted Chrissie Hynde. After almost 3 decades of recording with various lineups of her band the Pretenders, Chrissie is about to release an official solo debut in June. You’ll hear the first song from it right here.

It’s been a good couple of years since their hugely popular ‘El Camino’ album but The Black Keys are soon to return with a new record called ‘Turn Blue’. In the meantime, the band’s singer and guitarist, Dan Auerbach has built himself a reputation as ‘Producer du Jour’, working on records for Dr. John, Bombino, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Ray LaMontagne and more. Somehow, he also found time to make his own album.

Ben Harper is well known for his collaborations with the likes of Charlie Musselwhite and The Blind Boys Of Alabama but this time, it’s a family affair. Ben’s back and he’s he’s brought his Mum. Their new album, ‘Childhood Home’ is out in early May. As well, we have another song from the great “lost” album by Johnny Cash and you’ll hear it in this packed edition of Just Released. Just Released - 2014 [Ep.09, S.4]

“In his ear, he was about to hear,

An offer that he could not refuse …”

                                           “FALLINLOVE2NITE” – Prince & Zooey Deschanel [2014]

Collaborations ahoy! This week on JR you’ll hear a couple of doozies.

Prince (formerly TAFKAP) recently paired-up with actor/musician, Zooey Deschanel for a cameo appearance on Zooey’s TV sit-com, ‘New Girl’ – and to record a duet, now just released as a single.

Another great collaboration you’ll hear this week is from British Rock veterans, Wilko Johnson (Dr. Feelgood/The Blockheads) and Roger Daltrey (The Who). The pair met at a 2010 awards ceremony where they discussed a mutual admiration for Johnny Kidd & The Pirates (of “Shakin’ All Over” fame) Their album, ‘Going Back Home’ is a raucous return to their Pub Rock roots. 

Also in this edition, some great new Australian releases including a new single from former Killing Heidi vocalist, Ella Hooper ahead of her forthcoming solo album debut in June, some clever Electro-Pop from Canberra trio, Safia and a moving personal tribute from Melbourne singer/songwriter, Lior to his late grandfather.

   

We also preview the first song from the new Russell Morris album, ‘Van Diemen’s Land’, arriving next month as the follow-up to ‘Sharkmouth’, the most successful album of his career.

Not often do we hear new music from Central Australia but we have a treat for you in this edition from Indigenous group, the Tjintu Desert Band. They call their style of music Desert Reggae and their debut album ‘Tjamuku Ngurra’ pays tribute to the land of their grandfathers.

We previewed the new Simon Felice album, ‘Strangers’ on JR a few weeks back and now that it’s out, we return for another of its great but deceptively simple songs.

And in a show already brimming with highlights, we find room for one more. Philadelphia Indie Rock band, The War On Drugs has just released its 3^rd album, ‘Lost In The Dream’. The songs are sweeping sonic statements which can hark back to the Alternative ‘80s and still sound as contemporary as modern Rock can get. ‘Lost In The Dream’ is already one of our favourites of the year so far.

Just Released - 2014 [Ep.08, S.4]

“Now I’ve opened the lines,

There’s gonna be a transmission …”

                                           “Offer It Up” – Kate Miller-Heidke  [2014]

Trading security for uncertainty is a brave option for anyone. For a musician, it might be seen as risky. But that’s what Kate did. Kate Miller-Heidke has made a bold return to the world of Independent music with her just released 4th solo album, ‘O Vertigo!’ on which her extraordinary voice is at its operatic and acrobatic best. You’ll hear it in this week’s edition of JR.  

And there’s more Australian talent on offer this week with a new single from emerging Brisbane  band Sheppard and an impressive debut from Morgan Bain, a young singer recently named Western Australia’s ‘2013 Blues and Roots Act of the Year’.

Also in this edition we have the understated but grand statement from Mancunian band, Elbow and a feisty new single from Ireland’s Imelda May, ahead of her next album due out in June.

And we have great sense of history in this edition with a new album from Carlene Carter, reconnecting with her illustrious heritage as a member of America’s first family of Country music. As well, there’s a newly discovered “lost” album from Carlene’s late step-father, Johnny Cash, recorded in the 1980s but left languishing on the shelf until now.

We continue our look back with the 40^th Anniversary edition of Elton John’s masterwork, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’. The original double LP has been freshly remastered and expanded to include an Elton John live performance from late 1973 and a tribute disc featuring recordings of 8 of the album’s key songs, interpreted by contemporary artists as diverse as Ed Sheeran and Fall Out Boy.
