“You have found me on
the other side of a loser’s winning streak,
Where my thoughts all wander further than
they should…,”
“From The Right Angle” – Dawes (2013)
In this edition of JR we have an eye on the horizon
with the second single from London Grammar. The English trio is yet to release
a debut album but that hasn’t stopped their reputation from finding an audience
as far away as Australia. We also check new releases from a couple of Folk/Rock
bands with a preview of the forthcoming self-titled album from Edward Sharpe
& The Magnetic Zeros and the just released album, ‘Stories Don’t End’ by
Dawes. Both are Folk/Rock bands, both come from Los Angeles and both are 3
albums into their respective careers but, I swear, that’s where the similarity
ends.
Also releasing his 3rd album is English
‘sound sculptor’ James Chapman who performs under the professional name of
Maps. The title song from his album, ‘Vicissitude’ had us reaching the
headphones and dictionary at the same time.
It was bound to happen. With Nile Rodgers suddenly
made highly visible to a new generation via his association with Daft Punk, the
idea of revisiting his earlier recordings is both timely and logical. The title
‘Nile Rodgers Presents The Chic Organization: Up All Night’ might seem like an
opportunistic cash-in (it is) but cynics beware. The album collects (mostly in
extended Dance mix versions), some of the smoothest Funk grooves of the late
‘70s Dance era. Along with songs by Chic are some which Nile Rodgers and his
collaborator (and indelibly fluid Bass player) Bernard Edwards composed for
others like Sister Sledge, Diana Ross and Deborah Harry.
We also have new singles from current albums by
Mumford & Sons and Passenger. (The Mumfords will be back in the country
later this month, headlining Byron Bay’s ‘Splendour In The Grass’
Festival.)
And stirring up dust on the Comeback Trail this week
was English Funk band, Pigbag. Their debut single, “Papa’s Got A Brand New
Pigbag’ was all over alternative radio in the early ‘80s. Three decades on,
they’re back with a new album, optimistically titled, ‘Year Of The Pigbag’.
Mumford & Sons: “Babel” (new
single from the album, ‘Babel’)
Dawes: “From The Right Angle” (preview
from the album ‘Stories Don’t End’)
Passenger: “Holes” (new single from the
album, ‘All The Little Lights’)
Chic: ”I Want Your Love” (from the
album, ‘Nile Rodgers Presents The Chic Organization: Up All Night’)
Pigbag: “Cuban Rice (Is Very Nice)”
(from the album, ‘Year Of The Pigbag’)
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros:
“Better Days” (preview from the album, ‘Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic
Zeros’)
London Grammar: “Wasting My
Young Years” (new single)
Maps: “Vicissitude” (from the album,
‘Vicissitude’)
Pigbag: “Afrodite On The Horizon” (from
the album, ‘Year Of The Pigbag’)
