Just Released - 2014 [Ep.07, S.4]

“Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof,
(Because I’m happy) …”

                                           “Happy” – Pharrell Williams [2013]

Ubiquitous could be Pharrell’s middle name right now. Everywhere you turn, there’s his smiling face under that Smokey the Bear hat. He’s in Australia this week. Did you know Pharrell’s hat now has a Twitter account?  Trust me, when your wardrobe is hitting social media, that’s a ubiquity event horizon. On JR this week, we’re playing songs from Pharrell’s new album, ‘GIRL’.

With two new singles in as many weeks, Coldplay continue to lift the veil on their forthcoming album. Last week we previewed “Midnight” and this week we have “Magic”. Both songs imply a noticeable departure from the flag-waving anthems the band is famous for. When Coldplay’s ‘Ghost Stories’ album arrives in May, things should become clearer, unless, of course, there’s another new single next week.

Also in this edition, we’ll introduce you to a performer soon to be on her way to Australia. Nikki Hill is an American singer and songwriter whose heart and heritage are set squarely in the soil of Southern tradition. Her music is a blend of R&B, Funk, vintage Rock ‘n’ Roll …and occasionally, Ska.

On the local front, we have a new single from Washington (her first in a couple of years) along with a 4th album from Indie favourite, Sally Seltmann, ahead of her tour next month.

Jake Bugg returns with a new song from his Rick Rubin produced album, ‘Shagri La’ and we return to the well with another track from Beck’s just released ‘Morning Phase’ because, well, we like it. Making its debut at No. 5 this week ‘Morning Phase’ earns Beck his highest chart placement to date in Australia.

We also preview ‘In My Soul’, the forthcoming new album from American Blues guitar veteran, Robert Cray. This time, Cray draws as much from ‘60s Soul as he does from the heritage of the Blues. We know he can play that guitar but ‘In My Soul’ serves to highlight more of Cray’s singing, which brings a rare authenticity to songs previously made famous by Otis Redding and Lou Rawls.
